Saying:
   "send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message
    'subscribe' in the body. Or, if you prefer, subscribe via the
    web form at: http://www.foodomain.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/foolist";

Sure. I find the web interface invaluable not only for subscribing, but,
as a mailing list maintainer, for managing moderated posts, checking the
archives, configuring bounce/reject options, updating the numerous other
config options and so on.

But no-one's saying that you have to like that kind of stuff, too.

My personal opinion, and of course, you're free to have your own, is
that Mailman is by far the best mailing list manager available. I hate
the fact that it's written in Python because it means that I have no
inclination to hack on the source code. I would dearly love to have a
mailman-like system written in Perl, implemented as application modules,
skinned by the Template Toolkit, easy to customise, extend and so on.
But we ain't got anything nearly as good as Mailman written in Perl,
so I use Mailman and live with it.

Your metric kilometerage will vary.
