Aoa. A few days back, I had sent you an email requesting for adding a
discussion on your program (if possible) on the topic of 'ho jaey ga, ker lain
gay' syndrome so very prevalent in our society in particular and the muslim
world in general. Thank you for a prompt reply to that email.
There is another topic that can be discussed (if it already has not been) on
your program and that is about how we as a nation are 'destroying' Urdu
language. Just one alphabet needs to be discussed: 'Qaaf' and the way we
convert it so conveniently into 'Kaaf' - subsequently and drastically changing
either the meaning of a very important word or creating a new word that has no
meaning at all as it does not exist in the Urdu lexicon or 'lugath'. The issue
crops up because we have been blessed by Allah to have the ability to pronounce
the sound of 'qaaf' but we do not. There are nations, Egyptians, for example
who cannot pronounce 'Jeem' and they pronounce 'Jeem' as 'Geem'. They will not
utter the name Jamal, rather Gamal. However, we have the ability to pronounce
the sound of 'qaaf' but we do not. Even the Arabs have somewhat become able
somehow to pronounce at time the sound of 'Pay' instead of their natural 'Bay'.
Imagine converting:
1. Quran Shareef into Kuran Shareef (is there a word Kuran?).
2. Sura Baqara (meaning cow) to Sura Bakra (meaning a goat in Urdu but
otherwise no word). We are thus playing with the verses and meaning of our Holy
Book - but do we realize and do we bother?
3. The word 'Qul' meaning say in Arabic but we utter 'kul' meaning tamam or
all. Just think for a while what it will entail if we say " Kul huawallaho
ahad' instead of 'Qul huwallaho ahad'.
4. Other examples are "kaumi tarana', Kaaid-e-Azam, Ikbal (he would be
having a rough time in his grave really), 'keema', 'kabil-e-qubool' instead of
Qabil-e-qubool.
5. Qalb means heart, and kalb means 'kutta' or a dog. I am not going to
elaborate this point. You are educated enough to grasp my feelings.
6. And when you say ' unhoan nay apnay halkay say intikhab lara' instead of
'unhoan nay apnay halqay say intikhab lara' - implying someone took part in the
election very 'lightly'.
It is amazing to note that even our senior teachers, people from the
inteligentsia, media, have not bothered to raise the issue effectively or to
create an awareness of this blatant misuse of language. Please do not let this
language be contaminated any further otherwise, our next generation will not
even know what the actual beauty was.
I hope you will take out the time to at least think about this topic (though
its a very sensitive issue in this emotionally charged society of ours) and
invite some learned person/s who can shed some light on it and lets see what
he/they have to say about who is to be held responsible for this degradation of
language.
