Yes, I use books. 
However I work with Solaris and LINUX some years, before using this knowledge 
for certification.
The books for selfstudy are normally different from that for doing the 
certification. I mean they focus a different approach.

Reading one book for LPI and just doing the LPI certification like provide the 
correct answer doesn't mean you are up with linux ;-) 

I always write my answer above - so the news are above, and the reference is 
below.

Hi Thomas,
Did you use any books while attended high school ?
I did.
 
Of course the students are using linux solving
a lot of practical assigments during the course.

However it is also quite common for teachers to use written materiel in
their education of students together with practical assigments.
