Anything that works at the block device level is probably not very useful as a 
backup tool unless you make an LVM snapshot first (which is likely a good 
idea, anyway), because it is not feasible to use while the file system in 
question is mounted. This includes dump(8), which Linus has been warning 
everyone not to use for ages.
