Red Hat and SuSE both had these arguments long ago. SuSE put a lot of money into Evolution, which Red Hat then did as well. Red Hat also startd Mugshot which was a social media incubator, but eventually got out because it's much larger (than Red Hat) customers saw Red Hat as wanting to become a *'competitor.'*
