Regular expressions are like shell scripting: they're a major hurdle for beginners (if not in actual practice, then at least conceptually) but they are absolutely indispensable if you want to make the most of Linux (Unix). I must say I don't mind them in the introductory exam (there are some topics I'm a lot unhappier about) but it would be good to keep a tight focus, say, on ., *, […], ^ and $ – and say so explicitly in the objectives. After all, there are probably seasoned LPIC-2 alumni out there who would be reduced to tears by some of the more outlandish things that RE engines (including that of grep(1)) support these days.
