Again, just providing information. Both POSIX compliant ex [2e] and vi [2v] include regular expression support, and reference the concept of macros, but do not define any macro standards, or how they are executed (left to implemenation/site-local). I believe this is also the case since 1003.1-1993 (possibly even 1988), but I have only provided 1003.1-2008 links from The Open Group (which are still a decade old). - bjs P.S.
