TCP/IP printing is the method of choice -- if it works. We have
strange problems with some of our G4 Macs using OS9. Use the
'Desktop Printer Utility' which you can usually find in the
'Apple Extras' folder. It seems that there are some initial bugs
in this still, but it USUALLY works. If you want to connect older
Macs for which there is no Desktop Printer Utility, try 'netatalk'
I used CAP for several years and it worked well, but development
slowed to a standstill, so I tried netatalk. This is simpler to
install and manage than CAP. The original package was developed
by the University of Michigan. You can find it at
http://www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk/
The University of Michigan doesn't seem to be doing anything more
for netatalk, and Adrian Sun has continued development. You'll
find his updates at:
ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/users/asun/testing/
He has improved netatalk considerably over the last UMich version.
Documentation on netatalk is, unfortunately, almost non-existent.
But there are a couple of very active mail lists for Netatalk:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
and
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
I can't find the information on how to subscribe to these lists, but
I do have this blurb from the list server for LINUX-ATALK:
"More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the
LISTSERV
"reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO
REFCARD"
"command to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have almost always had solutions to problems within 24 hours from
these
mail lists.
Good luck
