This is the core of the problem, and I am also suffering from this fate.
Very little,(almost nothing) these days that is graphical and Mac, is ASCII.
It doesn't matter if you set the printing to ASCII, this is postscript and
your going to get binary embedded, (fonts, eps, jpeg, et al.)
Collective thoughts point to this comes from the pap. It only take the
stripping of one control character to fukaphile. If you're a programmer of
any ability, lets have a side bar and discuss this, because you are going to
have to dig way back in the netatalk lists if you want an answer to this
one. It seems to be conveniantly ignored.
