I have a working installation of LPRng and Netatalk to support print
queues for our computer labs' macs. We print to HP printers (8100DN,
IIIsi) with jetdirect cards over port 9100 using the ifhp filters.

With print jobs from some applications (freehand, for example), we get
errors from the printer when it passes through lprng. However, if we
enable ethertalk on the printer and print directly from the mac, it works
fine.

I have checked that we are printing in 'ascii' mode from the mac.
check_for_nonprintable is set to the default (on) so that it rejects
binary/corrupt jobs. I have also printed to file on the mac, copied that
file to the server, and printed it at the command line using lpr with the
same results, so don't think this is caused by papd corrupting the job.

Nothing ever comes out on the printer though, and the status file shows a
bunch of "offending command ^B^B" type messages. If I look at the
postscript file, it has regular postscript commands at the top, but it
also has a large binary section in the middle where an image is located.
I don't know why lpr isn't rejecting this job as nonprintable...

What I'd really like to know is if there is some restriction on the data
you can send to an HP printer over port 9100. It seems to work great
printing to the printer's ethertalk port, but we really need to funnel the
jobs through a queue for job management and page accounting.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks,

Andy Morgan
