Probably unrelated to your problem, but is stc500p correct
choice for Epson740 ?
You may also wish to check the Ghostscript driver from
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net (yes it is print driver
package for gimp, but also includes ghostscript driver), which claims
to be the best fro Epson's.
But you will have to recompile the Ghostscript.
