Because PDF is not postscript. You can use the 'xpdf'
program to convert PDF to postscript, and then it will
work quite nicely.
I used to have a script around to do this... but it is gone
into the bit bucket.
Note: yes, yes, I know that GhostScript will do pdf to
PostScript conversion, but the xpdf (or a similar thing)
was much quicker and lower on resources...
