It is icky, but is a far better solution than gs or xpdf.  Run the
acroread with linux binary compatibility.  Security issues are a
problem, but aren't they always.  You could also just bounce it to
another platform with a native acroread.

I don't actually FreeBSD my print server yet, but I'm really starting to
swing towards FreeBSD over linux for all the servers I have control
over.  Actually, I prefer OSF/1, but everyone else here hates it.  :)
