I noticed all the discussion about staircase text
ouput. None of the suggestions used have worked
for me. I installed these packages on 10/4:

I too was under the impression that using the ifhp
filters would work using the :filter parameter
I'm not trying to print anything fancy, just a
vi edited text file from a Linux (6.0/2.2.10 kernel)
version. The printer is an HP LaserJet 5M. It's
not new, but it's not that only, maybe 2-3 years old.
I did not update the BIOS, and haven't figured out if
I need too (saw recommendation in the documentation).
My version of LPRng is successfully installed and I get
this message with the lpq command:
[root@raid02 /etc]# lpq
Printer: hp4@raid02
Queue: no printable jobs in queue
Here's my printcap, which works, but I'm not really sure
how to specify a server and a client. I'm setting up
"raid02" as the server, and want other linux machines on
our network to be able to spool print jobs to raid02 and
print to one of about 4-5 printers in our building.
I'm also not sure when I'm supposed to use the "\" continuation
lines. Some examples I see use syntax with :\ at the end of the
line, no : at the beginning. I tried a combination:

# ifhp filter VERSION=3.3.21-1

Using this printcap file I can print to the hp5M printer with the
stair step. I don't know what to do. I logon to the raid02 server
and want to print out the "printcap" text file. If I don't figure
this out soon, my boss is going to a replacement (of me, not LPRng).
Do I have the :server and :client entries correct?
I have jetdirect software installed on our AIX and Sun machines,
but don't know if that software is available for Linux. I thought
the ifhp filters is software that's similar to the jetdirect software.
I need someone to give me some tips. Do I need to install LPRng
on the other linux machines that I wish to print from, or just
set up a printcap entry to direct the output to the spool on
raid02, then print to the network hp5 printer. I've read this
stuff and my brains are about to burst and my eyes are glazed
over.
