Replying to my own message here... Many thanks to Gene Rackow and Jon Thompson who both replied with useful information. It looks like various apps in Solaris (particularly CDE ones) have /usr/bin/lp hard-coded as the path to lp. So, the best solution is to first remove the Sun printing packages and then link from /usr/bin and /usr/ucb here to the LPRng binaries. I've written a script to do this and have run it on a few test machines. If no problems crop up, I'll do it on the remaining hosts.
