Actually it's not - it's postscript and Adobe does publish a
manual (thank God for that). Not only that (will wonders never
cease) but the interpreter actually does what the manual says
it will do - most of the time. Light weekend reading :-)

If you want to use PJL you pretty much have to have a manual.
You can buy a PJL manual from HP but last I enquired it comes
in a package of manuals, the rest of which you don't need, and
costs, as I recall, about $800. However it's on their web page
too. I found a bunch of stuff by searching for 12345X@PJL

It's like digging in muddy gravel, once in while you come across
a useful gem. You have to keep trying things and observe how
the beast reacts. I found that PJL is inconsistent and buggy.
We have three HP4000s and none behaved the same as the other two.

Trying to talk to HP is a study in frustration - they have an
army of people manning the telephones who's sole function, it
seems, is to prevent you from talking to someone who may know
something. Mind you, in my experience, Apple is worse.

I eventually gave up trying to use PJL. I have a filter which
removes all PJL from a job (which incidently shouldn't be there
in the first place) and so far at least I've been able to do all
that's necessary in postscript.
An amazing number of problems disappeared.

Me too - in particular dhcp/tftp. I would like to put some
printer setup commands in the tftp file but I haven't figured
out how to do that yet - maybe it's not possible?
