I need help from the LPRng community.
In the environment where I am currently working we've set up modest little
system (PII 350 -64MB) with:
Mandrake 7.0
LPRng 3.6.13-1
ifhp 3.3.10-1
samba 2.0.6
We support 183 printers with this system to both Sun Sparc and Win98 (soon
to be Win2K) clients. About a third of these are large format (HP750,
HP1050) plotters and the rest are HP Laserjet/Deskjet models.
It does an excellent job as is ... but we feel it may be a little to lean.
We would like some RAID protection, currently we have none.
We're trying to push for a standard print spooling solution and want very
much for it to be Linux/LPRng. The major stumbling block is that upper
management tends to favor Microsoft solutions <sigh> and unless we can
demonstrate that Linux/LPRng is the most efficient, sensible, robust
solution ... it will probably wind up being some Win2K box(es).
My job is to come up with a proposal which outlines cost (hardware needed),
features, admin overhead, etc. etc.
What I would like from you guys is your input:
If you shop supports 180+ printers, what hardware do you use?
Are you aware of any nasty Win2K problems concerning multi-platform print
spooling?
What features would you "play up" which cannot be had with Windows?
I've got a lot of ideas already ... but I decided that someone out there may
reveal some tidbits which would really bolster my position.
Any input or testimonials would be appreciated.
