Hi,
we use some new 'high-tech' Nashuatec D427 printers and these
printers have high response times. Printing directly from a win-
dows (I know, I know... ) -client makes the client hang for up to
a minute...
To take the load away from the client I configured a 'printer-server'
with LPRng in such a way that the client spools the job to a local
printer on the server, which in turn spools the job directly to the IP-
address of the printer. See below for a part of the /etc/printcap ;

The clients connect to the printer (e.g. "salesprint") through Samba
and I use the same setup for some Nashuatec printers and one Xe-
rox printer. This works just fine with the Xerox, but the client is still
somewhat slow (although better than before) with, for example,
showing the properties for the Nashuatec printers.
When I look at the server itself, I see that just because I connected
to the printer the 'refresh-status-job' (lpq) from the windows 'print-
tool' (in the background) produces a %CPU between 0,1 and 0,7 !!
This happens per person, when no print-commands are given yet.
Imagine what load the server will have to deal with when 40 people
use these printers...
Does anyone know of a way to configure LPRng to make the server-
(and client-) load a more healthy one? Any advise on this part is wel-
come!
