That is marvellous and I wish I had thought of it myself.  I had this problem
with an HP LJ4Si for a few years until I finally got stubborn enough to
upgrade the firmware so that it would actually turn off the banner page
(the upgrade was an ugly process involving borrowing a Win95 box installing
their JetDirect Java gizmo, enabling Windows networking on the printer, 
upgrading the firmware,...)

Filtering would have been much less work!
