That doesn't change anything, it still uses the remote name with the local
server.

That is only posible if the remote is a real lpd spooler system and not
a printer server box without spooling function. When the remote server
is a real spooling lpd server you are also free to ensure that the local
and remote printer names match.
It seems the workaround is to have separate printcap entries for the
server and client so the client entry uses localhost as the remote server.
Like this:
