That's discouraging since, on a Unix platform, one is really stuck with
whatever PostScript Adobe Reader chooses to put out

I believe that Xerox uses licensed Adobe on their and Tektronix's
printers.  The Tektronix 860 also has reasonable IP address restriction
and good page counting and busy status via SNMP, so we're using them. 
However, it flunked on printing a PDF file which worked on the Lexmark
printer.

As I remember, Xerox non-Tektronix printers flunk on the IP address
restriction requirement.

Thanks for this information.

How do you "enable TBCP"?

My acroread says 4.0 January 24, 2000.  I haven't tried any of my
"problem PDFs" on it yet.

Perhaps Adobe simply "improved" the PostScript spec.
