Umm... well, I hate to say this,  but your printer is old enough
(HP4) that the PRINTER may not have bidirectional parallel port support.
I just tried one of my HP4 (1991 vintage printers) and it did not.
I am a bit puzzled,  I thought that the last time I tried this printer
it did have parallel IO,  but it might have been an HP5 that I used,
or an HP4Mx


HOWEVER, when I plugged in an INTERAL Jetdirect TCP/IP card,
and used it,  I got full bidirectional support.
