This reminds me:  use of --with-cc in LPRng or ifHP breaks configure
badly because it bypasses much of the magic initialization done by the
latest autoconf foo; in particular, many configure tests will fail
because they test for "conftest.$ac_objext" where $ac_objext should be
"o" but is in fact "".
