There are two items interacting here:
  1. media type/size
  2. tray selection

There is a 'default' media type/size for the printer.
In addition, your print job can specify a default media type/size
  (i.e. - letter, a4, legal).

By convention, if you have paper trays with 'sizing' options,
then printer will only select paper from the tray with the
specified media. If you have TWO or MORE trays with the same
media, then you can select the tray.

Thus, you need to look at the type of paper you have, and if the job
is specifying a paper type.

By the way, this problem is only going to get worse as printers
get 'smarter' about paper size/type in the various trays.
