I also have a HP 4100tn.  Using the voodoo in the RedHat 7.2 printconf-gui,
I had no problem defining a printer (by configuring the printer "driver")
to print from the lower tray.  But RedHat is not using ifhp.

You don't sound like you need this kind of example, but I figured I'd let 
you know
just in case you wanted something that works to look at.

(I'm having problems with the trays and ensuring job ordering.  I've got a
different color paper in the lower tray and want to print on it 
occasionally,
in a specific order relative to other print jobs.  I can't get -B to work.)
