I've vague recollections of problems with NIS(+?) and groups, when
each user is configured to have his own private group. (For putting
chmod g=rws
on (home) directories to automatically let group members share files.)
There was
some limit on the total number of groups you could have. I recall
limitations
in the NIS protocol.

I gave up and went to ldap, which at last look (openldap) has a
performance problem when
there's large numbers of groups and you're logging in. At the time, nobody
was admitting this problem. I was too lazy to force the issue after
everyone had expended
effort to fix other, more critical, problems. But ldap _does_ work.
Could be fixed by now.
(Or maybe not. I recall linux had an inefficent method of looking up
groups when you're not logged in, compared to the BSD system calls.)

This was maybe 18 months ago?? See the openldap list archives.
