This is a very interesting bug report. Strangely enough,
I have run into EXACTLY the same problem on a system and it
drove us nuts. It was a problem with the parallel port
hardware and a missing interrupt. I ended up editting
the parallel port driver to add a 'timeout' function,
but this only made things worse.
The user replaced his Motherboard and problem went away.
Good luck on this one.
By the way, I have seen similar problems with
HP JetDirect (external) units attached to parallel
ports. Some printers are fine, others die. Almost
always tracked down to hardware/cabling problem
on printer.
