Yes, you're quite right - sorry.

Unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem.  Sometimes
I wish I could get a hold of those HP engineers and bang
their heads together.  All we need is a simple status
test to tell us if the printer is actually finished printing.
I would actually want a few other tests, such as "Are you
jammed", "do you need paper" etc. but I can live without
those if HP finds it to be too complicated a concept.

What I have done is require all jobs to be postscript and
then count the number of showpages/copypages that are
executed.  It's actually quite reliable.

The postscript only requirement had garnered some resistance
from our users but nothing really serious.
