Hi All, Thanks for everybody's help/suggestions...problem solved!
Basically I needed a username & login to access the share via smbclient and then I was able to connect to the printer using smbclient and shunt data to it without a problem. As Jim said, you probably need to setup a kind of "guest" account in order to log in properly without a username & password as such.
