There is a limit to the gsave level (according to the book
typically 31). The postscript is likely exceeding the limit
on the printer while gs has a higher limit.
Whether this is a postscript or a printer problem is a matter of
opinion. The postscript is probably overusing gsave. You didn't
mention how the job was created but if you want to make it, or a
similar innocuous one, available I would be happy to look at it.
