Here is a LPRng success story.

At the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA), at Linkping
University, in Sweden, we use LPRng to handle all printers in the
undergraduate and graduate/research system networks.

We have a total of 22 printers: 15 Xerox Phaser 4400DT (B&W), 4 OKI 7200
(colour), and 3 old HPs (as personal office printers). 7 Phasers are
located on the undergraduate system network while the rest are for
graduate/research.

We have two Sun Netra T1, that run Solaris 8, as print servers, one for
each system network.

We use in house development SNMP software written in Perl for load
balancing and for accounting/quota management (with PostgreSQL backend).
Thanks to that we have the source to LPRng we can easily extend/fix it
when it does not behave the way we would like it do to. LPRng also has
lots of bells and whistles that we can turn on or off easily globally or
per printer basis.

We also looked at CUPS, but as we needed a drop in replacement for the
Solaris lpd, LPRng was the way to go as it provides real backward lp
protocol compatibility with good access control configuration options. We
did not have to change anything on our client workstations which was a
requirement.

The Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA) was founded in
1983, but the roots go back to the early 70s. It is one of the largest
departments for computer and information science in northern Europe, with
more than 270 employees, of which over 50 faculty members (Ph.D.s),
including 17 full professors. There are approximately 175 Ph.D. students
enrolled in the Ph.D. programmes, including around 80 doctoral student
positions.

The department's research covers a broad spectrum of areas, from computer
systems and core computer science, including theory, languages,
programming environments, real-time systems, artificial intelligence,
intelligent systems, logic and databases, to more applied areas such as
cognitive systems, economic information systems, computational
linguistics, information systems and autonomous systems.

The department offers approximately 40 Ph.D. courses every year, and
approximately 150 undergraduate courses for students within the Institute
of Technology and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The total number of
undergraduate students is about 1000 full time students per year.
