What I did is I installed CUPS on the same machine LPRng and all the filtering is running and made cups just use the LPRng queues in uri-style (i.e. Device URI: lpd://print.cwi.nl:515/printer) Building/installing CUPS - I did this on Solaris - is easy and pretty straight forward. The only extra work I had to take care of was dropping the PPD's in place and fiddle with a bannerpage. If you decide to take the same road I'm happy to help.
