Jeff, Ron, As a limit, even today Lucent has a product that can carry up to 128 channels at 10Gb/s (or 64 channels at 40Gb/s) over a single fiber of about 100km, and with repeaters it can go up to 40 x 100km (or 10 x 100km for 40Gb/s) without regeneration:
