are you telling me that you would prefer to use the cvs files with
the catalog data rather than casjobs to query the data?
I don't want to use SQL; it's a bad match to a lot of things that
I want to do. What I'd _like_ would be to be able to pretend
that all of my data was loaded into memory, and write simple
(vector-valued) programmes in SM, IDL, or scipy to do my science.
This isn't possible. So we use RDBMSs to handle some of the
aspects such as disk I/O and distributed processing of queries;
but this is NOT the model that we really want. However, with
the current state of the art, it's what we have. Hence the
reaction from Jacek that we don't want to know about programming
solutions.
