You seem to be extremely confused. If you say "/bin/sh", you are only guaranteed the base POSIX functionality, which does not include "for ((i=0;i<$n;i++))" syntax. At least it did not the last time I checked, which was 8AM Pacific time on Wednesday August 20th, 2008. See: http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/xcu_chap02.html Search for "The for Loop". The only syntax specified is the old "for i in list" form. If you want the very nice (but non-standard) bash function, the script needs to say "/bin/bash" rather than "/bin/sh". This was indeed what my initial patch did, which was rejected. A later patch (which I acked) modified the script to conform to the POSIX standard. Now, it is true that many distros link /bin/sh to bash, which as far as I know is perfectly legal. But distros that restrict /bin/sh to the strict POSIX function are within their rights as well, not?
