Charles,

the '5' is NOT 5 minutes.

The '5' indicates the runlevel that service is for.  That is, when the 
system
is in runlevel 5, the /usr/bin/kdm service will be started.

I think Bjorn is onto something here.  I'll bet you still have another
display manager running.  What distro/version are you running on your
server ?

If there is another display manager running, then try commenting out the
kdm line, and see how things work.
