Just a thought, but perhaps you have fancy screen savers running...These
really saturate the network after a few become active. This would
appear to be the case, since the slowdown occurs only after a certain
time interval.
You could try turning them off completely and using the power saving
feature instead, or at least use just a blank screen saver.
