the INIT scripts find the kernel version you are running and will load
modules for the corresponding kernel version you compiled

2.4.9-ltsp-3  (kernel)
=
2.4.9-ltsp-3   (modules)

2.4.9  (kernl you make)
=
2.4.9  (modules in new dir)
