Matt,
Ah, it looks like the smc-ultra is one of those nics that also requires
the 8390 driver to be loaded, like
the ne, ne2k-pci, 3c503 and hp drivers.
This requires a change to the /linuxrc script in the initrd, to cause it
to load the 8390.o module.
I checked all the drivers, and I see that the wd.0 and the e2100.o
drivers also need the 8390, so
i've updated the ltsp_kernel package and I'm uploading to the
Sourceforge site now.
it'll probably take an hour or so for the package to appear on the
download page.
