Rob,
That's not the problem. He said he is booting to runlevel 3, getting
a bash prompt, then running /tmp/start_ws. That should bring up
Xwindows and give him a login.
The question I have, is whether the screen is completely blank,
or if he has a grey screen with a cursor, but no login screen.
The answer to that question will tell us whether it is an X Config
problem on the workstation, or and Display manager problem on the
server.
