Hi,

Regarding Shuttle, you may try:

in particular:

Subject: Re: [Ltsp-discuss] underclocking CPUs for fanless operation

I looked at this a few months ago. The problem is that single board
computers
are hideously expensive for what they are. You're far cheaper going for
a
small ATX board, perhaps coupled with a solid-state power supply if you
want
it silent. You'll get a much higher spec machine for much less money.

The smallest motherboard I know of is the Shuttle (www.shuttle.com, but
it
appears to be down right now) FV24 motherboard, couple that with the
Cyrix C3
450MHz processor and you won't even need a CPU fan. The board only has
one
PCI slot, and you'll probably need that for the bootable LAN card. I
think it
has LAN built in, but don't know if the BIOS supports network booting.
Shuttle also do a case just large enough to hold the mobo, PSU and one
card.
I think it worked out at about 300 pounds sterling (....~US$420?), for
the
case and mobo. Add £20 for the RAM and £45 for the CPU. The cheapest
single
board I've found came in at £550, and that was a 486 based system. This
didn't even have an ethernet interface, which cost extra.

Unfortunately I was having difficulty getting hold of one of the Shuttle

systems, as they don't seem to have any distributors in the UK, so I
haven't
had a chance to test this yet myself. This project is on the back burner
till
the middle of the year, but if anyone has any experience with LTSP and
the
Shuttle's I'd like to hear about it.

Steven
