Those programs require GNOME.  If you run them through straight ICEwm, you
will also be running GNOME.  However, it will be faster because you will
have configured it yourself and thus will not have put all those billions
of other things into it like the major distrobutions do.  That's why it's
faster..  You can get the same effect by optimizing what is loaded when
you run KDE or GNOME--but it's a lot of work.  Caldera, however, did not
do this and therefore KDE 2.2 is very comparably fast and light on their
beta 3.1 desktop.

The KDE Kicker panel also offers icons on your desktop.  Try killing it
and you'll notice your icons disappear.  If you set this up with ICEwm or
Kwm or whatever Window manager, you should get the desired result.

The slowness of those desktop systems is due exclusively to the
distrobution's tendency to stuff everything they can fit into it.  If you
stuff all the same things into a non-desktop system then it would be many
times slowers.
