Martin, You can still use the 2.4 kernels with the older etherboot.
You just need to use mknbi-linux to tag the kernel, and use the '--append' option to add the 'NIC=' parameter. The benefits of using the 2.4 kernel is that you can use devfs, which makes device node management easier. we don't have to play the games with creating device nodes in the /tmp directory and then symlinking them to /dev. Also, the 2.4 kernel has better support for USB and other new devices. You don't have to switch to a full LTSP 3.0. if your workstations are working fine now, then keep the setup the way it is.
