You can speed up X very noticably if you run the connection through ssh.
Adding the following two lines to /etc/ssh/ssh_config make a big
difference on my machines. Two things to note:1, this is case
sensitive, and 2, you may need to tinker with the compression level. It
needs to be a single-digit integer.
Compression yes
CompressionLevel 9
