Your W2K terminal server should have come with a fixed number of client licenses. Ours
came with 7.
I believe that when connecting to a win term server that each connection constitutes a
license usage on the win term server - regardless of how many connections come from
the same client ( or ltsp server). I can't completey confirm this but it is what our
Win Admin tells me.
The documentation says that you can run rdesktop with a '-l' which should run it
without requesting a license. I have tried it with the -l and it will connect. Now, if
doing so actually uses a license on the server...I don't even know how to check that.
It seems strange to me that the win server would allow a connection from a client and
let the client decide if it wants to use a license or not, especially since M$ is so
crazy about licensing. If the -l does in fact allow you to connect to a win server and
not use one of the licenses then the question becomes - Is that technically 'legal' to
do under the terms of the win term server license? Since I've never read it, I have no
idea. Of course, it would be best not to even have to ask this question....which is
precisley why we are setting up as many linux terminals as possible instead of win
terminals.
Unfortunately, we have (as I'm sure most companies do) a few apps that will run only
on MS windows and the software companies are unwilling to develop ported versions to
run on *nix, so rdesktop seems to be the best solution for us when those apps are
needed for now.
cheers,
rob
