Hi,
I have installed the ltsp rpm packages on a Dell computer with a Raid 5
and 512 MB of Ram, intending to make it work as a try for people on our
departement who do not know anything about linux and wanted to try it out
before partitioning their hard disks...
The one big problem i found is that apparently the version of XFree86
which is included in the ltsp packages doesn't appear to like very much
most of the hardware we bought in stock...
We have many Dell computers, furnished with the Ati Radeon 128 video card
which apparently works fine with both Red Hat 7.2 (I tried to install it
on one of them) and Mandrake 8.0, but under the ltsp system it hangs with
a message that says: No deivce found.
I tried to use the old XF86_SVGA, but it didn't work either...
Well, I thought, i can do it myself...
And so i did. After having installed a fresh new system i copyed
everything i needed under an exported dir on the server and made it
available with the dhcpd daemon (Actually i copied EVERYTHING...),
compiled a new kernel with whistles and bells and fired it up...
It works. XFree86 starts, and I can do a query... Then I though, why not
using the processor of the client? Let's try it out.
Kde starts, but hangs on the "starting services" thing...
Could not find anywhere what those services are, and i don't have a clue
of what could be wrong... the original system works fine on the client.
And there is absolutely nothing different, a part from the location of
the root file system...
Well... it might be good not to use 2 gigs of the server just to fire up a
query, but I can't find a way to make XFree86 work under ltsp...
Has anyone had the same problem with the ati chip?
Or, even better, does anybody have an idea of what could make kde hang on
the "starting services" when done via nfsroot (only with Red Hat,
though... Mandrake works fine...).
Is there any other mailing list around about nfs root systems not
specifically Ltsp?
