*** I have ran into a similiar problem with SMP and 2.4 kernels. Sometimes
it's a problem with the MPS specification of the
motherboard interpretation of the spec. Check in your BIOS and
look for "MPS 1.4" (probably under advanced options). If it's there
DISABLE it. This will
have the motherboard revert to using MPS 1.2 which should work (at least
it did for me)...Take a look...
