Try with 8 bpp also. The colors will not be nice, but the hardware may not 
be up to more. Is that really XVGA, or SVGA? How much video RAM do 
the cards have?

You could try to experiment with modelines in lts.conf if you feel like it. That 
is time consuming and a bit hit and miss. Someone posted a link to a 
resource for figuring out modlines a while back.
