I have one ws with a serial mouse. It gave me a few fits initially as well. 
The two key elements ended up being:
X_MOUSE_RESOLUTION = 50
X_MOUSE_PROTOCOL = "Microsoft"

I wasn't aware that changes to the lts.conf had any effect on a running workstation. I 
have always restarted workstation after changing lts.conf...just to be sure.
