I'm not sure how one would go about setting up a firewall/gateway machine.
I suppose you could setup a machine running the display for a
gateway/firewall, but remember, the inherit user for LTSP is the fact that
the work is done one a single source box, the rest of the workstations are
nothing more than displays of the work being done on the server. However if
you are looking for other small distributions for this type of project, I
suggest you look at the LEAF project (Linux Embedded Appliance Firewall). I
am currently using this setup based on the Dachstein dist. You can find
more information at http://leaf.sourceforge.net . I am running my
gateway/firewall machine on a Pentium 166MMX w/ 32mb ram. Runs everything
great. It acts as a DHCP server, ipsec gateway/server/tunnel, and firewall.
It is very configurable, with awesome support from the mailing list. My
setup is as follows

Internet - Home (LEAF/Gateway) - 192.168.3.x to multiple clients.

I have setup my LTSP box to only act as a tftpd server (which works with a
little effort) and then serves the xserver just fine. I am currently
working on getting the xserver to work across the ipsec tunnel.. I should
have that completed tonight. I'll post my findings as they occour..

Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] Setup for firewalls/gateways etc

I'm interested in finding out if (and how) people are using LTSP for setup
of non-
workstation boxes for things like firewalls and gateways

It seems to me that it would be good for this ... if there's a hardware
problems,
just swap the network card into a new box and reboot (once it's been setup)

I also think that it should be possible to do set these up using rc scripts
at boot
up

What are pros and cons of this method?
